about Graybill
Martin B. Graybill, M.D. opened his office in Escondido with his partner Henry C. Barron, M.D. in 1932. Their office was located in downtown Escondido at 145 W. Grand Ave. Before settling in Escondido Dr. Graybill was a worldly traveler. He graduated from Loma Linda University medical school in 1924 and finished his internship and residency training before working as a missionary doctor in Lake Titicaca, Peru with his wife Ruth. He also traveled to Europe to study surgery in Vienna and then Budapest. He returned to the United States in 1931 during the Great Depression. In 1931 the population in Escondido was 3,500.

By 1940, Dr. Barron had left and Dr. Flaiz, who had practiced in Vista for a year, joined with Dr. Graybill as a partner. The office was named Graybill Clinic. In 1950 the office moved from 145 W. Grand Ave. to a brand new building at 250 S. Kalmia. During the late 50’s Drs. Kellog and Loeffler joined Dr. Graybill.

Palomar Memorial Hospital opened its doors on February 16, 1950 thanks to a community effort to get financing. Many physicians in town, including Dr. Graybill, were instrumental in the endeavor. Dr. Graybill was named President of the medical staff and officially introduced the 20 physicians that comprised Palomar Memorial Hospital’s medical staff. The hospital has honored Dr. Graybill by naming its Graybill Auditorium after him.

In the 1960’s Dr. Beddoe joined the partnership along side Dr. Graybill, Dr. Flaiz, and Dr Loeffler. Towards the end of the 60’s Dr. Pleitez and Dr. Cole also joined the partnership. This marked an era when physicians like Dr. Graybill delivered babies, performed surgeries, took turns covering the emergency room and worked as a team helping each other with a wide variety of medical procedures. Dr. Graybill was compassionate about his trade working long hours was part of his daily routine. House calls were common practice and because he spoke Spanish he was well known in the Hispanic community as Dr. "Gabriel" that’s as close as they could pronounce his last name. He was not only a dedicated professional but also a humanitarian. Dr. Graybill made monthly trips with a group of physicians to treat patients in Mexico who other wise would not be able to receive medical care.

In the early 70’s Dr’s Stilson and Booth joined the group. Shortly after, Dr. Flaiz retired in 1974 and Dr. Graybill retired in 1979. Dr. Graybill died later that year. 2002 sparks the 70th Anniversary of Graybill Medical Group and also its legacy to provide quality, compassionate medical care. We are proud to continue to honor and uphold the tradition of such an outstanding and caring individual as Dr. Graybill.
